An IoT Developer designs, builds, and maintains the software and firmware that powers Internet of Things (IoT) devices and systems. This role sits at the intersection of embedded systems, cloud computing, and data engineering, requiring a broad technical skill set to connect physical sensors and actuators to digital platforms. Typical responsibilities include writing embedded C/C++ or MicroPython for microcontrollers (e.g., ESP32, ARM Cortex), implementing communication protocols like MQTT, CoAP, or HTTP/2, and integrating devices with cloud services such as AWS IoT Core, Azure IoT Hub, or Google Cloud IoT. On the backend, IoT Developers often build data pipelines using Node-RED, Kafka, or serverless functions to process telemetry streams, store time-series data, and trigger alerts. They also develop RESTful or GraphQL APIs for device management and user-facing dashboards. Security is a core concern: developers must implement device authentication, encrypted communication (TLS), and secure over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates. At the junior level, work focuses on prototyping with Arduino or Raspberry Pi, writing basic sensor drivers, and debugging connectivity issues. Mid-level developers take ownership of system architecture, optimize power consumption, and manage cloud infrastructure. Senior IoT Developers lead cross-functional teams, define technical roadmaps, and evaluate hardware-software trade-offs for production-scale deployments. Collaboration is frequent with hardware engineers, product managers, and data scientists. Remote compatibility is medium; while coding and cloud work can be done remotely, hardware testing often requires lab access.
